Synopsis
How an Avenue of Honor is Created
A local
Service Organization
decides it is time to actively recognize young people from the community
actively serving in the Armed Forces. This
Service Organization
takes the lead in affiliating
with the national Avenue of Honor organization and launches the program in the community
they are serving. As a confirmed
Lead Organization,
they then enlist the cooperation of other community organizations to form the local
Circle of Honor,
an inclusive grassroots support group. This consortium may include the Chamber of
Commerce, other service clubs, veterans groups, houses of worship, and the local city
government. The local City Government will then declare that it will establish an
“Avenue of Honor” on a well travelled corridor in the heart of the community. When
one of their young people goes on active duty, they will be honored with a sponsored
“Freedom” sign, proudly displayed on one of the light standards lining the street.
It will display the individual’s name, branch of service, and acknowledge that they are
indeed “Defending our Freedom”. “Thank You” is emblazoned on the reverse side.
When this individual returns home from active duty, the sign will be retrieved and
presented to the individual and his family and friends at a City Council
meeting. Their sacrifice and commitment will be honored and recognized.
